THE MAN FROM EARTH
My favourite genre film of this century…I think it’s because I watched it knowing absolutely nothing about it. A friend of mine got it from some DC++ hub or torrents. I don’t even remember if torrents existed for us at that time, but it was definitely some site where, as late teenagers, we could get weird films. And this one didn’t look good from the cover picture. Most probably, we smoked some weed and watched this recommended film, THE MAN FROM EARTH (2007). And it blew my mind.
At first, I was waiting for something to happen, some action, but then it just pulled me in. It was all dialogue-driven, but I watched it in one breath. I had never seen such a static film with such power.
And now, many years later, I’m actually afraid to rewatch it. I’ve recommended it to dozens of people, but I haven’t watched it again myself. Is it really as mesmerising as I remember? I don’t want to destroy that dream. Even though the reviews say it’s a masterpiece, I guess I don’t have to be scared.
The same thing almost happened to me just this autumn when I saw SIRĀT. I was at a film festival in Leeds and went into the screening knowing nothing about it. And from the first Pink Floyd–in–Pompeii–style shots, I was completely pulled in.
